GEnie Navigator (for lack of a better title) is a VERY simple set of White Knight macros that allow you to move from one “page” on GEnie to another very quickly and without having to remember the page number…or anything else. All you have to do is click on the icon that corresponds to the page you wish to move to and you’ll be there in a flash!
I’m sure this “navigator” won’t even compare to future navigator macros, as I have not (and probably will not in the future) make any significant changes to these macros. They are provided only as an simple example of what can be done with White Knight macros. If you like this navigator, you might send an appreciative note to Linda Kaplan (GEmail: L.KAPLAN), who encouraged me to upload these macros (hope you like 'em Linda!). Of course, I would be interested in your comments as well.
Information
All the macros in GEnie Navigator are provided in text format. To be able to use them, you’ll first have to make some important changes to those macros that look for other files on your White Knight volume. When you open a macro using a word processor or text editor, look for any characters enclosed in curly brackets ({}). These statements must be changed to match the volume names for your system. Of course, delete the curly brackets before saving the file. For more information on volume/file names in White Knight, please refer to the manual.
After you have made the appropriate changes, compile the macros in White Knight (see the WK manual for instructions of how to do this). Once the macros have been compiled, they must be placed in the proper folders. The following are the macro names and the folders they must be placed in:
Place the “Navigator” folder in the same folder as the White Knight application.
In folder “Navigator”:
Batch DL Proc
Cricket Proc
Games BB Proc
GEnie Macros 1
GEnie Macros 2
Logoff Proc
Mail Proc
Switch 1 Proc
Switch 2 Proc
Switch Main Proc
In folder “Navigator”, in folder “Freesoft”:
Freesoft BB Proc
Freesoft NewFiles Proc
In folder “Navigator”, in folder “Mac RT”:
Mac BB Proc
Mac DL Proc
Mac NewFiles Proc
MacPro NewFiles Proc
In folder “Navigator”, in folder “SuperMac”:
SuperMac BB Proc
SuperMac DL Proc
SuperMac NewFiles Proc
Once you’ve placed these macros in their respective folders, you must either create a macro button or icon to run the “GEnie Macros 1” macro. This macro opens up the navigator macro window. Save your macro file and save your settings at this point so that this macro button or icon is available to you whenever you want to access GEnie. From this window, you will have access to all the macros in GEnie Navigator. I’d provide details about each command, but I think you’ll all be able to figure them out.
Customization
Chances are, you don’t frequent some or all of the RT’s or other “pages” that I have in this navigator. To change them, all you have to do is determine what the GEnie page and/or command number is for where you want to go. For example, if you frequent the MacPro RT and never access the Cricket RT, you could replace the command in the “Cricket Proc” macro to “TYPE M480^M”. Of course, you would want to rename the procedure file to something like “MacPro Proc.” In addition, you’ll have to re-define the macro button or icon in White Knight. Check the manual for instructions.
Other changes you can make is to place the macro window on either side of the screen, or on the top or bottom as well. White Knight can place the icons in vertical or horizontal format. Check the manual if you don’t know how to do this.
I have also included a file containing the color icons I used for each macro. If you like, you can use these icons or others that you like. Again, the manual tells you how to assign icons to a macro.
General Information and Disclaimer
GEnie Navigator is freeware, and is provided “as is,” with no warranty of any kind either implied or otherwise. In addition, IT HAS NOT BEEN TESTED AT ALL on any other system other than my own. In fact, it is probably compatible only with Mac II machines because it uses color icons, but I am not sure of that. Anyway, I cannot and will not guarantee that it will work on your machine—use it at your own risk. This may sound like a cop-out, but this navigator is intended to only be an example of a White Knight macro set, not as a full-fledged GEnie Navigator. Perhaps Magic GEnie or something else will fill that role soon.
Please feel free to make any changes to the navigator that you may desire. As far as distribution is concerned, GEnie users should download it from the library. If you decide to distribute it in other ways, you may distribute the original version only, and the documentation and color icon file must accompany the macro files. If you wish to distribute an improved version, please make it clear that it is a modified version, and include documentation of what changes you made. Oh, and PLEASE upload it to the software library here in the Mac RT so everyone may enjoy it. By the way, if anyone uses this navigator to come up with a money-making navigator, I would appreciate credit, if not royalties. Hope you all like it!
